2025 International Symposium on AI Bias
Date: June 4, 2025
Sungkyunkwan University, in collaboration with the Pioneer Research Group for Socially Responsible AI, successfully hosted the 2025 International Symposium on AI Bias on June 4, 2025, at Cho Byungdoo Hall, 600th Anniversary Building, Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. Supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), the symposium explored the challenges of AI bias and discussed technical and social approaches to address them.
Distinguished speakers included Professor Namkee Park (Yonsei University), Professor Seungbae Kim (University of South Florida, USA), and Professor Haewoon Kwak (Indiana University Bloomington, USA), who shared research findings and global perspectives on AI bias. A panel session led by Professor S. Shyam Sundar (Distinguished Professor at SKKU and Director of the Center for Socially Responsible AI, Penn State University) fostered vibrant discussion on the long-term societal impacts of AI and interdisciplinary solutions to bias.
The symposium welcomed over 100 scholars and student researchers from Korea and abroad, providing a forum to advance discourse on human-centered, trustworthy AI and to build consensus on ethical standards for future technologies. The event also featured the awards ceremony and presentations of the winning teams from the 2025 Bias-A-Thon, held earlier in May.
Professor Jinyoung Han, Director of the Pioneer Research Group for Socially Responsible AI, emphasized, “As AI continues to advance, ensuring fairness and trustworthiness has become a critical priority. This symposium and the Bias-A-Thon represent important milestones toward establishing ethical standards and delivering practical insights for responsible AI.”
