2025 International Seminar on Responsible AI
Date: January 17, 2025
The Pioneer Research Group for Socially Responsible AI at Sungkyunkwan University hosted a special seminar featuring Dr. Yao-Yi Chiang, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Minnesota, at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, Sungkyunkwan University.
Dr. Chiang, an expert in spatial artificial intelligence, has an extensive background in machine learning applications for understanding complex environmental phenomena and human-environment interactions. His career includes research roles at Google AI, consulting for Meta, serving as Chief Scientist at AirMap, and founding the Kartta Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to advancing public geographic knowledge.
In his lecture titled “Spatial AI for Understanding Human-Environmental Interactions,” Dr. Chiang emphasized the importance of analyzing where and when changes occur in space and time to model spatiotemporal phenomena. He introduced recent Spatial AI technologies, including:
Mining and extracting information from large collections of historical maps,
Linking OpenStreetMap data with Google Street View imagery, and
Using web data to better understand human-environmental interactions.
The seminar provided valuable insights into how Spatial AI can address real-world challenges by integrating diverse multimodal datasets, inspiring discussions on the future of AI applications in environmental and societal contexts.
